Job Summary

This position will work onsite at our campuses SF Parnassus, SF Mt Zion and SF Mission Bay 3-4 times a week and will oversee a hybrid team of 10 direct reports.

Under the direction of the Physics Dosimetry Lead, the Chief Dosimetrist will lead the daily workflow and distribution of tasks ensuring daily coordination and on-time completion of patient treatment plans. The Chief Dosimetrist will enable cross-coverage and provide formal training creating an educational program for all dosimetry and specialists in the treatment-planning group. The Chief Dosimetrist will work with the treatment planners to improve the quality and consistency of all external beam plans, including 3DCRT, IMRT/VMAT, SBRT, and Helical Tomo therapy (HT).

The Chief Dosimetrist accepts work from the physician, plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignment in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, and/or accepted published practices. Completed work of other treatment planners will be evaluated by the Chief Dosimetrist in partnership with the Physics Dosimetry Lead for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformance to policy and requirements. The Chief Dosimetrist will also be responsible for monitoring timesheets and vacation requests, and facilitating coverage needs.

(50%) Perform Treatment Planning services

  1. Perform treatment planning, including 3DCRT, SBRT, and VMAT/IMRT as-needed
(25%) Lead and supervise in partnership with the Physics Dosimetry Lead:
  1. Lead and coordinate the generation of templates for different anatomical sites to ensure uniformity of planning approaches
  2. Lead and supervise the daily treatment planning workflow of treatment planning staff
  3. Coordinate and implement the initial patient treatment
  4. Partner with Physics Dosimetry Lead to perform performance evaluation of trained staff
  5. Participate and make recommendations for direct hires
  6. Complete evaluations and manage time and attendance
(25%) Training:
  1. Establish a training program for current treatment planning staff, physics residents and dosimetry students
  2. Enable cross-training for all treatment sites, machines, and systems
  3. Establish rotation and training schedules to ensure that all dosimetrists will be fully trained and able to maintain competencies
  4. In Partnership with the Physics Dosimetry Lead, create an educational environment for improved quality, consistency and professional development
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (10%)
  1. Act as a team leader for complicated tasks, teach and implement treatment plans at multiple sites for all tumor locations
  2. Provide backup for the Physics Manager as needed
  3. Aid in the implementation of new treatment planning techniques, train new and current staff in all aspects of treatment planning and provide clinical insights on quality assurance issues as needed in an effort to improve workflow efficiency
  4. Work to improve communication with the physicians and therapists
  5. Train dosimetrists, dosimetry student(s), dosimetry staff, medical residents, physics residents, and technology student(s) as needed
  6. Attend and participate in meetings including: section managers, QA, and other recommended relevant meetings
  7. Provide input for performance evaluation of trained staff
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and University and Department procedures
  9. Represent department at outside meetings as needed
  10. Participate and make recommendations for direct hires
  11. Assess and recommend section staffing levels
  12. Assist with budget preparations
  13. Provide input for section fiscal goal setting
  14. Attend on and offsite meetings as needed
  15. Other duties as assigned

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist
  • BS in Physics, or equivalent experience
  • 7 or more years experience as a dosimetrist
    Continuing CME hours necessary to fulfill ongoing CMD certification
  • Demonstrates supervisory skills; independent work approach; and teaching ability.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of a specific individual, including all patient age groups including: infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten or more years experience as a Dosimetrist
  • Previous management experience
  • Leadership and change management experience
  • ARRT registry

License/Certification

  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist
